Bryan and I have lived together for over 7 years. We have lived in 3 houses, and finally have the opportunity to build. In my earlier post I told you that we sold our house in the City in July (yes we just moved there less than 8 months ago). Since that post we have purchased some land outside of the city near a golf course (Score for hubby). It has been one of the best decisions for us.
Bryan and I met at College while studying Architectural Technology. We both have a love for interiors and building which made us jump at the chance to build our own home. One of my favourite hobbies is scouring Pinterest, Studio-McGee, Jillian Harris Design & any other interior decorating sites, looking at the beautiful work they create. So to have the chance to design our next home, I was all for it.
Our taste is a mix of modern farmhouse and Scandinavian design. We love all white walls, with a bold accent wall and lots of natural wood. We move into our new house on November 19th and I thought I would share a few of the things I am most excited about.
Top Highlights So Far.
- Kitchen – We have kept it simple and went with a shaker style cabinet. We decided to paint our island Benjamin Moore – Abyss. It is a deep rich navy while we kept our perimeter cabinets a pale grey – Classic Grey by Benjamin Moore. There was a lot of back and forth on the hardware finish. We were stuck between brass and black and intimately decided to go with the black as we have some beautiful brass pendant lighting above our island that we didn’t want to compete with.
- Lighting – Speaking of beautiful pendants. Our lighting for this house is one thing I am so excited for. We handpicked every piece with a lot of care and consideration. Our main sources we used were: Wayfair.ca, Home-sense (who knew Home-sense had such great lighting), CB2, Canadian Lighting Experts and Lumens.
- Flooring – I am in love with our flooring. We chose a pre-oiled maple flooring. I love the wide planks, and matte finish. This is one design element I cannot wait to get installed.
I have included our floor plan for the new house. We have made some modifications to the plan that are not shown. We added french doors off the Master bedroom, added another window the the kitchen to add some more natural light and added a fourth bedroom to the basement. We moved the wall in the laundry room to the other side of the closet so the mud/laundry room is now one large space. Once we move in i’m going to look at built-in locker style cabinetry #momporn.
I can’t wait to share our progress on the new house and create posts that go into detail on some of the finishes we have choose and our design inspiration.
